Winchester, founded by Colonel James Wood, became the county seat in 1744. The county was, however, was not formally organized until five years later when the county court met for the first time on November 11, 1743.
HISTORICAL: Frederick County was created by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses on November 11, 1738. SCOPE AND CONTENT: This collection contains deeds, surveys, and abstracts of deeds for Winchester, Fredrick County, and surrounding areas from 1765 -1926.
